Wearing teeth whitening strips for longer than recommended...?

I was wondering if wearing a whitening strip for longer than the 1/2 hour they tell you to wear them is bad for your teeth of it it will just make them whiter? I think I wore one for about 3 hours once and my teeth were sensitive but nothing terrible.

Wearing teeth whitening strips for longer than recommended...?
better get checked out for dentures cos you will loe your teeth like that
Reply:My dentist told me not to exceed the time. As the stuff used for whitening removes the top layer of your teeth (which is usually all the gunk build up etc), and some of it absorbs into your teeth enamel. You can damage your teeth by over doing it and land up with falsies way before you become a senior citizen.
Reply:Actually, the white strips are a low enough concentration of the peroxide solution (bleach) that unless there are underlying defects already in the teeth, no notable damage will be done. Some of the bleaching systems I use are worn all night.

You should always follow directions, they are there for a reason. For most over the counter variety of bleaching systems, the peroxide breaks down over a short period of time; so wearing them longer than directed doesn't have a greater whitening effect.

Tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of the treatment. Sensodyne tooth paste works well to decrease the discomfort.

Good Luck!
Reply:Well, after the recommended time, a half hour in ur case, the chemicals stop working...so nothing continues to happen. I suppose it depends on the brand, but the ones I used stopped working after a certain period of time.

  1. Yes tooth sensitivity is a common side effect of the treatment. Better if you ask your teeth whitening dentist about the possible effects of the process.
