Do teeth whitening strips damage the enamel?

I've heard whitening strips damage the enamel. Is this true? If you know for sure how they work and whether or not it's safe, please let me know. If they do damage your teeth, is there another, safer, method of whitening your teeth?

Do teeth whitening strips damage the enamel?
Yes, they weaken your enamel. Most over the counter whiteners are meant to produce results in a very short period of time, and use ingredients that are very harsh. You'll get white teeth, but you'll also get tooth and gum sensitivity. You may not be able to drink hot or cold beverages some a few days. And your gums may turn white and become sore. I would recommend having a dentist do an in-office whitening. The process is also quick, and you may experience sensitivity as well, but the main difference is the dentist is careful to isolate tooth structures,. (the gel will not touch your gums)
Reply:i just got done using crest whitening strips and they haven't done any damage and i know person who has used them several times and they havent damaged the enamel at all. if you still dont trust them you can use this stuff that you brush on your teeth at night. forget what its called tho
Reply:Yes they do.. teeth whitening strips damage your teeth if used in excess. True story my old roomate was a dental hygenist and he use dto always come at me with crazy stuff. He suggested I did NOT use teeth whitening strips and if I had too, then only use exactly by the directions on the box. Also go in cycles. Use a box or whatever, then stop for awhile and so on, prolonged use he told me was damaging.

Interestingly enough he told me that our teeth, are actually supposed to be a yellowish off white color. There is a protective substance over our teeth to keep them from damage and naturally are teeth should be off white and there is nothing wrong with that. Problem is society says you have to have white teeth. SO if you do use these teeth whitening products just be warned your teeth will look brilliant, but your moth will always be very sensative to anything cold hot spicy sour etc etc... is it worth it? Not to me it aint. So use thjem but only inmoderation and read directions carefully. Otherwise just brush, floss, and moutwash regularly. That will keep teeth healthy and clean ...

Also he would ALWAYS tell me to chew ICE BREAKERS gum in the cubed form. He told about the ingredient in it called Sorbitol. He actually told me that the sorbitol found in ice breakers gum is actually better for your teeth than brushing them!!! No lie... he did also remind me that chewing the gum is not an alternatie for brushing as the gum couldnt scrape away old food..lol.. but yea.. so keep a good regular routine of rinsing, brushing flossing... and chew the blue packages of ice breakers gum in the cubes form...

good luck with your teeth
Reply:It is safe as long as not abused or used improperly. Some people use the Crest whitestrips daily or monthly instead of the safe 1 time a year. Other use them underage, it probably is not safe to use until enamel is fully mature. For most people, 16 or older would be a safe age. The above statement is good, but they now make gum with Xylitol also which is even better for your teeth. However, you should brush your teeth. Gum is a good substitute during the day.
Reply:Not to worry too much as only over usage will hurt your enamel. To avoid this, you just have to simply follow the instructions carefully and limit the usage.

One popular tooth whitening product that you can use is bleaching solution that contains peroxide for bleaching tooth enamel. The bleaching agent in these products is usually carbamide peroxide, which is available in 10, 16 and 22 percent concentrations.

Whiteners that contain peroxide typically come in gel form and are placed in a mouthguard. Some products are used twice a day for 2 weeks while others are intended for overnight use for a 1 to 2 weeks period. If you can obtain the bleaching solution from your dentist, he will be able to construct a custom mouth guard to fit your teeth precisely. Currently, the American Dental Association endorses only dentist-dispensed home-use percent carbamide peroxide tray-applied gels.

In addition to bleaching solution, whitening strips are increasingly being used as a preferred tooth whitening product. For instance, you are now able to get your hands on a set of Crest Whitestrips Supreme from any convenience store. The flexible, invisible strips are coated with an enamel-safe tooth bleaching gel. To whiten your teeth, you simply place the strips on your teeth and wear them for about 15 to 30 minutes each day. After a period of about 21 days, you should be able to see a significant difference on the brightness of your teeth.
